River Steelheading

Needless to day this past week has been nothing shore of amazing when it comes to early spring steelheading. Monday along between three buddies and I, we went 20 for 36 in half a day. Throughout the week we kept on them but as the weekend neared and the excessive amount of anglers started showing up, the bite slowed down. Saturday I ran a trip that I donated to Salmon Unlimited for their trout derby and it went great. A little slow at first but Dave and his two son in laws killed it during the second half of the trip. Dave even got his new personal best steelhead pushing 10lbs! Yesterday, Sunday the 5th, there were easily 30 cars at the Horlick Dam, 25 cars at Quarry Park, 25 cars at Colonial Park and 30 cars down river of the Steelhead facility on the Root River. But the trick to catching fish was downsizing everything. Instead of spawn, Andy and I switched over to an all Creek Candy Bead program and it yielded 4 fish for Andy and I went 1 for 2 with a nice post spawn brown trout. This week I will be out of town fishing the North American Ice Fishing Circuit National Championship in Minnesota but when I return next week I'll be running more trips on the river for steelhead and if the wind plays nice, the boat will be out jigging for brown trout, lakers and cohos! If you want to book a trip give me a call or send me a message.
